Derek Canas is a long-term HIV survivor, speaker, and advocate who founded D-REK’S Angels & Warriors to amplify the voices too often left out of HIV conversations; heterosexual people impacted by HIV, serodiscordant couples, and families living with the legacy of medical transmission. With lived experience at the center of his leadership, Derek brings raw honesty, courage, and purpose to every space the organization enters. His vision is simple and unshakable: dismantle stigma without shame-based language, create room at the table for overlooked communities, and lead with truth.
Kimberly Schenk
Co-Founder | Vice President | Managing Director
Kimberly Schenk serves as Managing Director of D-REK’S Angels & Warriors, helping turn the organization’s mission into visible, community-centered action. She is one of the driving forces behind the nonprofit’s growth, blending strategy, creativity, and relentless follow-through to expand outreach, strengthen partnerships, and elevate the stories that deserve to be heard. As both a leader and builder, Kim helps shape the organization’s public voice and long-term direction; ensuring Angels & Warriors stays grounded in real people and the belief that HIV advocacy must include everyone.
Mechelle Coiner

A dedicated longtime supporter of D-REK’s Angels & Warriors, Mechelle brings compassion and commitment to everything she does. For the past three years, she has played a vital role in organizing and expanding the Annual Toy Drive; helping ensure hundreds of children receive joy and care during the holidays. As Board Chair, Mechelle’s leadership reflects the heart of D-REK’s Angels & Warriors; community, kindness, and action that makes a difference.
Garrett Moseley
Community Liason
Garrett officially joined the team to strengthen community ties and amplify local impact after years of being a longtime supporter of D-REK’s Angels & Warriors Annual Toy Drive. Known for his positivity and genuine care for people, he works to connect the organization with local businesses, partners, and events that share its vision of compassion and awareness. Garrett’s energy and outreach help bridge the gap between advocacy and everyday action. He brings the D-REK’s Angels & Warriors mission into the heart of the community.
